About
History of Lakeside Secondary College
Lakeside Secondary College was established in 1959 and is a single campus, Year 7 - 12 school. The College is situated in the industrial area of Reservoir and has served the multi-cultural community of Reservoir for the past 50 years.
The College began its history in 1958 a church hall in Gilbert Street and moved to its present location in 1959.
Lakeside Secondary College is situated in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, in the mixed residential and industrial suburb of Reservoir. While the student enrolment has fluctuated over the past 50 years, it currently sits at 420 which is a small size for a secondary school. Despite its size, the college is proud of its efforts to provide a broad range of opportunities for students with the strong care and support of a small school environment.
The college has a diverse mix of cultural influences, with 39% of students coming from a language background other than English and some 32 language backgrounds being represented at the college. The cooperation and tolerance of language groups at the college is an ongoing source of pride.
Provision discussions with Merrilands P-12 College and Ruthven Primary School commenced in 2008 with proposals being considered that may consolidate the schools onto a single site. In 2009 the two colleges began providing VCE studies cooperatively. (Please see the 3 schools-1 community page for further details).
The college leadership team comprises the Acting Principal (who commenced in 2008), an Assistant Principal and six Leading Teachers, who work as sub-school leaders, in professional learning, student learning and ICT. The college operates as two sub-schools; Years 7 to 10 and Years 10 to 12 with Home Group teachers and Year Level Leaders at each year level providing the first and second tiers of support for student wellbeing.
The college has attracted the support of local firms over the years and particularly from VISY Recycling, which has assisted in funding for facilities and by sponsoring numerous programs. The college provides some excellent resources and the facilities offer accommodation for the range of programs.
Lakeside Secondary College is committed to developing young people as resilient, interdependent and responsible lifelong learners who are respectful and achieve successful pathways for their futures. Both students and staff operate under concise value statements. For students: Respect, Teamwork, Achievement, Friendship and Relationships, Free Speech. For staff: Highest Professional Standards, Respect, Teamwork, Care and Support, Achieving Potential.
In the current Strategic Plan our goal in the student learning area is to improve students’ literacy and numeracy at Years 7 – 9. Our wellbeing goal is to enhance student wellbeing and engagement and strengthen relationships throughout the college. There are two goals in the pathways area: to develop and further improve the transition program/process from Grade 6 to Year 7 and to improve student transition in readiness for VCE or its equivalent.
2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Lakeside Secondary College. It will be a year when the community looks back with pride at its achievements, and forward to the role it will play in providing education for young people in the northern suburbs in years to come.
I commend Lakeside Secondary College to you as a school where students can grow through their achievement and thrive as successful and happy individuals.
